The rules in the Bahamas are quite simple STAY TO THE LEFT. Most visitors find it difficult to operate vehicles where the wheel is located on the left, when they must also drive on the left, but eventually you will become adjusted. If you ever find yourself on the wrong side of the road, your vehicle’s unique license plate identifies your car as a rental, and the locals will be sure to warn you of your fault.

The speed limit in the Bahamas is especially enforced on the major highways. The limit in most residential areas in 30 mph, on a city road it is generally 40mph, but do watch out for school zones as you must reduce your speed to 15mph during certain periods, this zone is recognizable by a yellow sign as well as a flashing light. Flashing lights may also indicate a corner in some secluded areas so do keep that in mind.

As in most countries, red means stop, yellow is a caution and green means go. There is no right hand turn if the light is not green! Please watch for speed bumps in all residential neighborhoods, as well as in the International Bazaar area and Port Lucaya Marketplace.

Be aware that it is now the law in the Bahamas to wear your seatbelt at all times, that includes your passengers regardless of their age. If you are found without a seatbelt on you will be fined, as well your passengers, in some instances you can be held accountable for your passenger not wearing a seatbelt.
