There is one main hospital, which is operated by the government, there are also many private medical clinics located on Grand Bahama. The service is presumably the same in both places, but both have their own drawbacks. The government run hospital is free to all residents but is very slow in admitting people with minor injuries, colds and coughs, etc, whereas the private clinics are fairly quicker in dealing with patients, but efficiency does come with a bit of cost.
If you were ever to call an ambulance on Grand Bahama, it is not set in stone that because you called an ambulance that you have to go to the main hospital. In many situations you can request that you be taken to a private clinic.
The majority of the doctors who practice in the private clinics also practice at the government hospital. There are many doctors who are very knowledgeable, but they tend to own there own private clinics and charge a lot more. The government hospital (The Rand Memorial Hospital) provides a variety of medical services including medical, surgical, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, accident and emergency, psychiatry, pathology, clinical laboratory and radiology.
A few of these services are not available in private clinics. This medical overview would not be done without mentioning Dr. Roop. He is the most experienced in the medical field and has knowledge in both holistic health and general medicine. If you have an ailment that no other doctor can seem to remedy, go and see Dr. Roop. You can find out more about him from your front desk and any local you may encounter. Everyone knows about him.
